8/1 - And for her dismount...

The DDA assessment went well yesterday, but they haven't posted the scores on the jumbotron yet. The assessor was an independent contractor who  makes a report with recommendations, and she planned to send that report to the DDA last night. She was great, asked all the right questions of the hospital and Chelsey, and said Chelsey is a perfect fit with the profile of patients going into a group home or respite care. We don't know the actual recommendations, and we're anxiously awaiting DDA's response.

Chelsey needs to dismount the hospital balance beam today regardless of DDA's answer, because the insurance says so. Hospital charges after today would probably hit Chelsey personally, but it's small consolation that she'd be declaring bankruptcy rather than us.

IF the DDA responds today and IF they approve step-down care and IF a step-down facility magically has a slot available, then Chelsey will  go to a group home or respite care tonight. And we'll consider it a perfect 10, gold medal, and minor miracle.

If not, we'll decide between bringing her home or staying in a hotel. One of the DDA contacts suggested considering the hotel idea as a way to maintain a more controlled environment, reinforcing the conclusion that we can't handle her at home. It could possibly, maybe, sort of increase likelihood of getting placed in a group home. If we bring her home and actually handle it briefly, there's a chance we hurt our own cause.

There are perverse incentives for failure and illness. I was actually kind of hoping Chelsey would not have one of her best days for the assessor yesterday. I naturally want her to recover and heal quickly overall. However, if she's going to have periodic bad days as a normal part of the recovery, it would have been ideal to display all the weirdness she could muster as they determined how much treatment to fund.
